Essa ideia se enraizou por volta de 1920, quando o cientista japon\u00eas Shirai relatou que, ao implantar c\u00e9lulas tumorais no corpo de um rato, a resposta imune as destru\u00eda. No entanto, se essas c\u00e9lulas eram colocadas no c\u00e9rebro do animal, elas sobreviviam, sugerindo aus\u00eancia de uma resposta imune nesse s\u00edtio.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mais tarde, essa hip\u00f3tese foi confrontada por v\u00e1rios neurocientistas, incluindo a cientista israelense Schwartz quem, na d\u00e9cada de 1990, demonstrou que, ap\u00f3s uma les\u00e3o aguda no sistema nervoso central de ratos, c\u00e9lulas do sistema imune (macr\u00f3fagos e c\u00e9lulas T) protegiam os neur\u00f4nios de danos e sustentavam a recupera\u00e7\u00e3o do tecido lesado. Afinal, n\u00e3o fazia sentido que um tecido t\u00e3o indispens\u00e1vel, como o c\u00e9rebro, n\u00e3o fosse protegido pelo nosso sistema imunol\u00f3gico.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoje em dia o c\u00e9rebro n\u00e3o \u00e9 mais visto como um \u00f3rg\u00e3o isolado do sistema imune. Ele hospeda suas pr\u00f3prias c\u00e9lulas de defesa, conhecidas como micr\u00f3glias. Al\u00e9m disso, outras c\u00e9lulas imunol\u00f3gicas, como macr\u00f3fagos e c\u00e9lulas T, circulam pelo tecido cerebral atrav\u00e9s de vasos sangu\u00edneos. Devido \u00e0 presen\u00e7a de uma estrutura conhecida como barreira hematoencef\u00e1lica, essas c\u00e9lulas n\u00e3o entram e saem livremente dos vasos sangu\u00edneos. Contudo, quando h\u00e1 alguma amea\u00e7a, como um pat\u00f3geno ou uma les\u00e3o tecidual, elas migram para o interior do \u00f3rg\u00e3o para entrar em a\u00e7\u00e3o.
